Hutsul Koliada and Music from the Carpathians

Winter songs, troista music with Koliadnyky from Kryvorivnia

Yara Arts Group will present a theatre piece featuring the Koliadnyky, an ensemble of winter song singers from Kryvorivnia (a Ukrainian village in the Hutsul region of the Carpathian Mountains) and the explosive Lemon Bucket Orkestra the Ukrainian-klezmer-gypsy-rag-tag-punk super band from Canada.

Koliada is a winter ritual that now coincides with Christmas, but is much older in origin and symbolism. The oldest songs are preserved in villages high in the Carpathian Mountains, where the Koliada is considered to be the most important event of the year. Some people believe that Spring and the harvest will not come to the village unless the songs are sung in every household. The songs are incantations that assume the magical power of words: “what is said, will be so.”

Svoboda-The Rise of Nationalism in Ukraine

Oleh Tyagnybok, leader of Svoboda, has succeeded in winning parliamentary seats for his controversial party. It earned over 10% of the vote and will be guaranteed a place in the new parliament. Its polling success was unexpected and its political clout has raised legitimate concerns. Senior party officials have repeatedly made derogatory remarks about Jews, Africans, sexual minorities, and Russian-speakers among others. It has raised the specter of Nazism and the Holocaust.

If Svoboda’s campaign pledge does not go beyond defending Ukrainian culture, especially the Ukrainian language, and bringing Ukraine into the European Union then it has the potential to make a positive contribution. To do so, however, Svoboda and its leadership must mature by moving beyond demonizing various groups within the country. Otherwise, it will be, and rightly so, nothing more than a vocal, minority group given little credibility in the West.

Unchanged in the program are: children’s reading festival ” Bibliophilia” costume parade participants, act “Book of Stars” Book Quiz “Take, read!” Fair children’s books “Forum – to children!”. Expected collective creation of large-scale art mural, an international exhibition of illustrations for children’s works and for the first time – a sports festival and the festival board games.

Patriotic Festival “Lenta za Lentoy” (“Ribbon after Ribbon”)

This event will unite all those who dearly love Ukraine in order to raise the national spirit of Ukraine. Various famous Ukrainian patriotic bands will participate in the festival. There will also be karaoke of patriotic Ukrainian songs for everyone. The aim of the festival is to raise the patriotic consciousness of the youth and to maintain the glorious traditions of the past. It is a great opportunity to get together with friends, to have a lot of fun and to remember whose children we are.

Winter Fishing in Ukraine

Winter fishing on Lake Nobel offers a breathtaking experience. The lake is a unique location for winter fishing.  The depth of the lake and fairly shallow inflowing and outflowing rivers force fish to concentrate in the lake in winter. That is why winter fishing is truly amazing.
Perch may reach up to 1 kg and pike  – up to 8 kg.

Fishing season – late November – March.
Best time – November-December, second half of February – March.

Fish species: predators – perch, pike, pikeperch, catfish, asp
White fish  –  roach, bream, silver bream, flathead asp, tench, carp

Bait:
For perch – artificial bait (spoon baits, trolls and beams), live baits (scud, bloodworm)
For pike –   artificial bait (trolls and beams), live baits (bait fish) for zherlitsa.
